Larry Holmes was born in Cuthbert, Georgia. 3rd November 1949. Holmes, “The Eastern Assassin” was probably the most underestimated of modern Heavyweight champions. Holmes was never able to escape the shadow cast over him by his predecessor Ali. The only way Holmes might have closed the gap on Ali is if he had equalled or beaten Marciano’s record of 49 unbeaten fights. He failed to draw by one, although in his career he did equal Tommy Burns championship record of 8 successive stoppages in title defences from 1978 - 81.
