Ben Foord of South Africa took the British and Empire heavyweight championship from Jack Petersen in 3 rounds at the Leicester rubgy football ground in August 1936. This was the crowning achievement of a great season for him; he had previously beaten George Cook, Tommy Loughran and Larry Gains, among others. In his contest with Walter Neusel on 18th November 1936, Foord hurt his right hand and afterwards did not fight at his best. On 15th March 1937, Tommy Farr took the championship from Foord on points over 15 rounds and after that the South African lost to Max Baer, Max Schmeling, Walter Neusel (2nd fight) and Eddie Phillips.
