Sergei Liakhovich, who represented Belarus at the 1996 Olympic Games, was a long-time amateur who won Bronze at the 1997 World Championships. He amassed a 145-15 record before turning pro in 1998.

Liakhovich won the WBO title from Lamon Brewster on April 1, 2006. Liakhovich was knocked down in the 6th round, but went on to win on points via unanimous decision. He lost the title to Shannon Briggs by TKO in the 12th round on 4th November 2006 after being knocked down twice. After the first knockdown, Liakhovich, already shaky, got a big right from Briggs and fell through the ring ropes, prompting the referee to stop the match. The clock time was 2:59 at that point. His first defeat occurred on 1st June 2002 when he was KO’d by Maurice Harris in the 9th round. On 16th February 2008, Liakhovich lost to Valuev by unanimous decision.
